Meet the coach & Courageous Pigeon

Let me introduce myself

I wish I had learnt sooner that talking with someone who has no agenda other than to support you in more difficult moments, can lead to a more effective and productive work life, and more balance and contentment in and out of the work environment.

My name is Ziya and I am an associate member of the Association for Coaching.  I came to coaching after formal training on the post graduate coaching course at Warwick University.  This followed an unusual career path but one where I made coaching a part of my day to day work.  I have personally experienced many of the challenges (and rewards) managers, leaders and business owners face in roles which are often complicated by complexity at the organisational and interpersonal level.

Over the course of my career, I have worked in many fields. After university, I ran my own catering business. I became an investor in commercial property. Later, I joined a printing and communications franchise, and in education I have been a lecturer, a manager and then, a senior leader in the oldest surviving adult education institute in Europe.  Some ventures were more successful than others - I have seen a lot and learnt a lot along the way.

My qualifications include:

  • BA (Hons) Arabic and Turkish
  • MSc Real Estate
  • Diploma in Public Service Interpreting
  • Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults
  • Certificate in Education (Post 16 award)
  • Prince II Project Management Accreditation

The list of clients I have worked with include:

  • Education professionals
  • Mental health nurses
  • Marketing executives
  • Business owners
  • Change management consultants
  • Personal trainers
  • Charity sector executives

I know how working with individuals can unlock important changes for clients and the organisations they work in.  I have witnessed how the clarity that comes from having space to speak and be heard gives people struggling with direction or other aspects of their working life a measure of peace and the ability to move on with calm confidence and purpose.

Does this qualify me to give you lots of advice? The short answer is 'no...and that's not the point.' You are, and will always be, the expert in your field. What it does mean is that I'll recognise the challenges you're facing and I will understand what you are saying so we don't waste time going round the houses.

My person centred approach allows me to support you unconditionally whilst being honest enough so as to provide challenge when needed. I work well with people but I am not all schmooze. What I am always is sympathetic but pragmatic and practical.  My motivation is seeing you create effective change in what you do with a sense of calm and peace.  A better you is a more successful and a happier you. Even in the highest levels of leadership, I always worked to support others to perform at their best, ensuring that the organisation benefitted from the collective strength of those within it.

I look forward to meeting you.  Book your free discovery call with me from the link below, to see how I can best support you as you navigate your challenges.

So, why Courageous Pigeon?

Yes, the name is a bit quirky, and you may think it's a bit unserious. But I don't  believe that serious conversations always need to be solemn.

So, what makes a pigeon courageous? As a name for my practice I could have gone for something cliched (but relevant) along the lines of targets, beacons, guiding stars or journeys.  Instead, I chose pigeons. I could spin you a story about the tenacity of pigeons, their ability to always find their way, survivors in an urban landscape, individual but social, or something about the puffed-up pride they rightly show when they reach their goals.

But the truth is, I was watching some wood pigeons visiting our garden one day, and I thought, 'Why not?'

While coaching can be challenging, and requires courage, tenacity, vision and honesty, the process of unlocking your solutions can still be a happy one.

Indeed, as I have found myself, unlocking transformational change is an uplifting experience that will not just touch you, but those around you.
